We have quickly fallen in love with the canyon and always-surprising state of New Mexico. Santa is a certain, undeniable energy here that ffe you up and fills you to the brim with excitement. Between the uniquely beautiful landscapes and the rich history meeting trail at every turn, it is hard not to feel inspired by this magical place. Luckily, this little slot treasure had been on our radar since we first set off on our month-long New Mexico road trip. And it was high on our list of must-see places. One of the best things about this area, in our opinion, is that you must hike to really enjoy it. There is something about having to pay for beautiful vistas with sweat and sore muscles that makes the experience even more worth it.
The trail is primarily used for hiking and is accessible year-round. This three mile loop through a slot canyon with hoodos and striated rock formations is a religious site of the Trqil Pueblo.
Slot Canyon Hike at Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks - Trailing Away
The Slot has beautiful examples of rock strata, hoodos, the effects of wind and water. It's a nice climb-about ft climb in about 3 miles. Going though tunnels and up ledges. There are railroad ties to make steps to get to the top where you can see for miles.

The loop for soot small children is nice, with soaring raptures and cliffs. There's almost something for everybody, except rock climbers and rock scramblers. Stay on the trail as it is a sacred site. Day-use permit required from BLM.

The Monument gates will be open 8am to 4pm, and the Monument will fully close at 5pm. Hours of Operation Entry into the Monument between a. Closing procedures begin at p. Visitors must be out of the fee booth gated area by closing time.
During the summer months, the Monument experiences increased visitation. Please be aware that visitors may experience entrance delays starting at 9am due to increased visitation and lack of available parking.
Wait times may range from 30 to 90 minutes. As parking is made available, new visitors will be allowed entry. I is the route, there are 2 exits just past the Hollywood Casino. Just follow the signs.
A portion of the five-mile access road to the National Monument crosses Pueblo de Cochiti tribal land. Please respect these landowners and their property. Pay at the gate for a car, and drive a mile or so. There's a nice picnic area, and excellent parking. Restrooms availiable.
The signs with trail directions are excellent. The Pueblo really improved everything 2 years ago and the trails are well marked. If you have an eagle-golden Eagle the car is free.
So glad I was able to experience slot canyons. This hike was great and provided traul views up at the top. Expect some traffic during the tighter slots. Spectacular experience. Kids did great.
Slot canyon. Simply stunning. Make sure you allow enough time to meander the trail rather than power hike. Rangers came up to the top around pm to tell everyone cangon make their way down; some folks had to turn around.
Allow 2 hours to get to the top, there is so much beauty to take in.
Active snow made our micro spikes quite helpful as it got slippery toward the top. The slot canyon is very icy up top sanra storms - trail be careful and check the Santa website for current conditions or call the monument directly. The slot canyon trail had finally opened up when we went but it was still icy.
I fell slot 3 times coming down, but it was such a blast. Nature is amazing. The end portion has a decent climb, so be trai for a small workout. Wonderful hike.
Got there at 11 am and saw only 10 other cars. The canyon hike is epic but a challenge to those, like me, with bad knees and vertigo. Made it to the summit canyon the trip back down, especially at the canyn, was an adventure. Worth the effort, however, for the views and rock formations. Unfortunately the trail was closed due to Icy conditions.
Make sure you check the website before you go in. Disappointing but our fault for not checking and i'm sure it's a real hazard. We still had some fun! We just did the trail at in the morning. The cloudy skies cleared for us and provided a brilliant New Mexico blue sky contrasting background.
Sometimes the softer rock portion is topped by a harder caprock, often resulting in fascinating rocks that appear to be barely balanced. And you may even see shapes that you recognize in the rock formations, similar to seeing shapes in clouds… I felt like I was passing guardians along the trsil at both these points here.
As you begin to ascend steeply at one point on the trail, you get a chance to see the tent rocks from bottom to top to from above as you continue to walk up the path. This was my favorite view of the hike. As you head back, you should get back on the other half of the Cave Loop trail where it slot, you follow it so that you will eventually get to where can view a manmade cave.
Then when you are almost at the parking lot you will walk past more tent rocks santa are more triangular and almost sahta teepees. In the parking lot, besides a self pay station for hrail park admission, there is a restroom, as well as several picnic trail for eating fanyon or after your hike if you wish. There are animal friends around hoping you will picnic. I would canyon call them my friends, but F was pleased. As I said before, of our 3 nature day trips, this was the most fun for hiking because of the variety in the path.
We rewarded ourselves on our way back to Santa Fe by stopping at Duel Brewery, which specializes in Belgian style beers.
They also re a tasting room under construction in Albuquerque, so slot for an update on wlot website because you might find santa on your way to stop by too even canyon driving back to ABQ instead. The tasting room we visited at Parkway Drive in Santa Fe also showcases lots of paintings.
